The Second Chair: Courage, Influence, and the Crucible of Leadership

Empty wooden chair beside a pulpit under a warm spotlight, symbolizing the Executive Pastor role

There is a quiet gravity to this seat. It is a place where vision and reality collide, where influence flows without a title, where courage is measured not by applause but by the weight of responsibility carried faithfully and unseen. It’s a refining fire – a crucible where leadership is tested, tempered, and transformed.

This, is the seat of an Executive Pastor.

It’s in this seat where the deep work happens: the work that does not make headlines, that does not fill pews with visible accolades yet shapes the heartbeat of the church. It is found in small, sacred moments; the decision to intervene in a brewing staff conflict before it escalates, the courage to speak truth to a beloved Senior pastor, the wisdom to translate lofty vision into actionable reality without diluting its soul.

Here, courage is quiet. It is the calm in the storm, the steady hand on the rudder, the voice that asks the hard questions with grace. It is discernment- knowing when to act and when to wait. It is humility- serving a mission larger than ego or recognition. It is resilience- carrying the tension of ambiguity, conflict, and expectation without losing faith in the work or in God’s call.

And yet, there is a paradox here: immense influence paired with limited visibility. Executive pastors wield authority without the spotlight, shapes culture without commanding attention, carries extra weight well at a moment’s notice, and does the work that others rarely see. The true courage of this role lies in embracing this paradox: in leading faithfully, steadfastly, consistently, and intentionally- even when no one is watching.

To lead courageously from this second chair is to embrace tension as a gift, not a burden. It is to see that the friction, the difficult conversations, the invisible labor – they are refining people, shaping the organization, and preparing the church for seasons that it cannot yet see. It is to recognize that influence does not require visibility, that leadership is measured in faithfulness, not applause, and that the deepest work often goes unseen.

An Executive Pastor sits on sacred ground. It is where leadership grows roots deep enough to weather storms. Where vision becomes reality. Where courage becomes character. And where influence, intertwined with wisdom and humility, transforms a church not because it is recognized, but because it is necessary.

It’s not a spectator seat. It’s the engine of leadership. And those who choose to sit in it, anchor, interpret, protect, and advance the mission, imprinting defining marks of true leadership as they go. And within those tensions their unwavering faith converges with courage and influence.

An Executive Pastor is not a consolation…
…it is a calling – a position that shapes and moves the future of the church.
